In light of the growing conflict between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, the pope called for a global day of fasting, prayer, and penance that culminated with this prayer.

Amidst Eucharistic adoration, the assembly prayed, “Da pacem Domine in diebus nostris,” which translates to “Grant peace, O Lord, in our time,” asking the Lord Jesus to comfort the bereaved, enlighten the ruling class, foil war plots, dispel hatred, fortify hope, mend hearts, shield the impoverished, and greet the dead.
From a chair to the side of the basilica’s main altar, Pope Francis delivered remarks.
During her son’s crucifixion, the Virgin Mary showed courage and humility, as he said, “When on Calvary a sword pierced your heart… you kept alive the hope of Easter through the night of sorrow.”
